The Simple Approach to Concussion is available to physiotherapists who have completed The Simple Approach to Neck and Mid-Back Pain. (this course is available for purchase as a recording if you have not already completed it via Live Stream).
Assessment and treatment of clients with Concussion is not easy, but this simple and methodical approach is 95% of what I use successfully for clients suffering with concussion from an MVA, slip and fall, trauma, or sports injury. With growing awareness and research regarding concussions, there are countless recommendations with little evidence and lack of practical guidelines for physiotherapists. Although evidence shows that a multidisciplinary approach to concussion is most effective for clients with more severe or chronic concussions, the physiotherapist is a vital team member that is unfortunately often overlooked. Clients with concussion always have symptoms (which can include headache, dizziness, nausea, fogginess, poor concentration, light/sound sensitivity, pain, tinnitus, etc.) that come from the brain injury as well as the neck, and could also come from the vestibular dysfunction.
This course will demonstrate how to take a thorough history and physical examination, and treatment guidelines to address all 3 areas. The course objectives include:
- History taking and use of outcome measures for concussion
- Physical examination of clients with concussion
- Diagnosis and symptom management
- Guidelines for treatment of brain with education and aerobic activity
- Guidelines for treatment of vestibular with education and exercises
- Review of treatment of neck pain with education, manual therapy and exercise (from Neck and Mid-Back Course)
- Examples of Assessment and treatment techniques with live patient
- Case studies showing assessment and treatment progression
